Regional informations
Without a shadow of a doubt, the Drôme belongs to one of the most beautiful departments in France.
Mountains in the north and alpine pastures in the east, green hills in the west and the atmosphere of the Provence in the south, the Drôme has it all. It makes this region varied and fascinating.
The national park, the Vercors, was, till the beginning of the previous century, practically inaccessible. Now, with its impressing mountains and steep abysses, it is a paradise for sporty nature lovers. A fantastic area for walking and biking, with very popular winter sport places like Villard-the-Lans.
The south of the territory is called the Drôme Provençale for a reason. Pictoresque towns, like Dieulefit, Grignan and Nyons. Houses with those typical Provencal tiles, weekly markets, sunny terraces and old men playing their beloved 'jeu the boules' under the plane-trees.
In between the Vercors and the Drôme Provençale, flows the river, that lends this department its name, through a breathtaking valley. The Drôme finds its origin in the Diois and winds from there between mountains and forests, along towns like Die, Saillans and Crest, to the river Rhône.
The climate in the Drôme is Mediterranean with warm summers and mild winters, although, especially in the mountain areas, that may sometimes differ.
Purple lavender fields, yellow sunflowers and blue shutters. Little restaurants without menus and a pitcher of red wine. The Drôme, that is 'La vie en France'.
